Joanna was born in Connecticut in 1780, probably the daughter of Aaron Dewey. She had relocated to New York and married Eli Rose by 1802, when their eldest child was born.
Roscoe Whitman has this to say about Aaron Dewey as the possible/probable father of Joanna: "Due to his frequent changes of residence between 1781 and 1800, little has been learned so far of his family, and it is only circumstantial evidence that places him as the father of (7) Joanna Dewey.... Family records give Colchester as place of her birth; Warren, Herkimer County as place of her marriage, and the name of Aaron was given to her first son."
