Biography

Birth

The date and location of Nancy's birth is a mystery for the family. She did not live long enough to be listed in a census such as the 1850 census so there is very little documentation for Nancy. Three children lived until the 1880 census in which parent birth locations were asked: Their claims for their mother: Henry: Massachusetts; Sarah: West Virginia and Elizabeth: no answer. This does not help much.
Ref 1: 1880 census [1]

There is a suggestion, in John House's book: "Pioneers of Wood County", that her family lived in Wood county at Belleville during the first few years of the 1800s. Belleville is about 10 miles north of Muses Bottom where they showed up in 1807.

In fact... John Dewitt was assessed property taxes in Wood County, Virginia from 1804-1807 so we know they lived in Virginia by at least 1804.
It should be noted that Wood county was created in 1798.

Ref 2: 1804-1807 Wood County Personal Property Taxes [2]

There is no evidence where the entire family lived in 1798 to 1803 so there is no documentation for her first day of life. Her brother Alexander was born in 1803 because he was age 20 when he died in February of 1823 according to his grave marker. That suggests Nancy birthdate was in 1801-1802.

Her birth location could have been:
- back in Pennsylvania before the family left Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County,
- along their journey from Pennsylvania to Virginia along the Ohio River, or
- in Virginia.

Marriage

On 10 Jul 1823 in Mason County, Virginia Nancy married Isaac Baldwin Sherman (1800–1852).

Their children were:

Abel D. (DeWitt?) Sherman
1824–1852
Henry Clay Sherman MD
1828–1906
Charlotte Sherman
1830–
Sarah Baldwin Sherman
1831–1910
Elizabeth Sherman
1833–1914
Giles Sherman
1834–1850

Death

Whether her death was associated with the birth of their last child Giles is not clear.

Nancy was mentioned on a memorial in DeWitt Cemetery, Murraysville, Jackson County, West Virginia, United States with a death date of 19 March 1834.

In 1839 Isaac Sherman married his second wife Samary Mary McClanathan (1805-1898) on Nov 3rd In Meigs Co, OH. They moved to Illinois and produced four more children.

It is not clear why there were two entries for 1807. Also, Virginia did not collect these taxes in 1808.
