RESEARCH NOTES
No source records are held to commence or complete a full profile with sources that include civil records or parish records. Please add these if you have access to records in Tahiti.
However, anecdotal information, from the Dexter family history and about her descendants, has been used for the dates and events. The Dexter family history (copy on Ancestry.com) appears to have been written in 1904 and prior, so Eliza was still living when it was published.
Eliza Dexter was the daughter of American born George Washington Dexter, who had come to Tahiti in the Pacific Islands and settled there. George Dexter took local born Rereao Tuane Teruaotu as his wife (it is not known how they were married, whether by local custom and/or Christian custom) in 1858 and they had seven children together. The Dexter family had missionary connections.
Eliza was one of their daughters, and she married in 1885 to Scottish born Charles Metcalf Stuart who had a plantation in Paea.
They had at least two children together.
Herbert Teriitutarevaitaurere Stuart was born on 29 January 1894 and Annie Arthur Tuhirani Stuart was born on 9 August 1898.
Eliza died in 1911 at the age of 51, leaving her husband Charles a widower with two teenage children, as Herbert (who was deaf) was seventeen and Annie was thirteen. Charles remarried in 1913 and Eliza's children gained a stepmother. Two other children are mentioned in a death notice that was published in the NEW ZEALAND HERALD, VOLUME XLVIII, ISSUE 14650, 8 APRIL 1911 (see images section).[1]
These were Robert T T Stuart, and Arthur Kanahele Stuart, both then living in Auckland, New Zealand (in 1911). Arthur appears to have worked in the USA after this as records show him living in California USA during World War I and afterwards with his wife Gertrude. Some of these records show his origins but do not show the name of his parents. Other ancestry trees show him instead the son of Antoinette (Nita) Henry and William Thomson Stuart who was brother of Charles Metcalf Stuart, and who had also married in Tahiti. However it is possible that this is a cousin with the same name.
