Biography

Florence Bell Dexter was a daughter of D. Gilbert Dexter and Ellen (Simonds) Dexter, born 12 August 1857 in Wilmington, Vermont. According to the birth registration, her father was a merchant, born in Dover, Vermont, and her mother was born in Peru, Vermont.[1]

Florence B. Dexter and Charles H. Wiswell were married in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 1 January 1880, by Pastor Andrew P. Peabody. According to the marriage register, Florence was 22 and a native of Wilmington, Vermont, the daughter of D. Gilbert and Ellen Dexter. Charles was 27 and a native of Little Falls, New York, the son of Charles and Catherine Wiswell. He was a teacher. Both were residents of Cambridge, and it was the first marriage for both.[2]

The 1900 U.S. Census recorded Charles H. Wiswell and his wife Florence Wiswell in Lexington, Massachusetts. He was 47 years old and a school teacher, born in New York in August 1852 to a father who was born in New York and a mother who was born in Germany. Florence was born in Vermont in August 1857; they had been married 20 years and Florence had had three children, all of them living. Children in their household were all single and all born in Massachusetts: daughter Katherine Wiswell, 19, born in May 1881; daughter Margaret, 17, born in June 1883; and son Charles W Wiswell., 14, born in March 1886.[3]

The 1910 U.S. Census recorded Charles H. Wiswall, 57, and Florence Wiswall, 52, at 336 Waltham Street in Lexington, Massachusetts, with their three unmarried adult children. Charles H. and daughter Katherine were both teachers in private school, Margaret was a visitor of state wards in the state charity department, and son Charles D. was a bond salesman.[4]
