Samuel Dexter was born in 1726 in Dedham, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, the son of Samuel Dexter (minister).

He married Hannah Sigourney in 1748.[1]

He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1764 to 1767 and again in 1765, and 1785. He was a selectman for five terms beginning in 1764, justice of the peace, and town clerk in 1761. He was also town clerk for a total of five years.[1]

His son was Samuel Dexter, who served both in Congress and in the Presidential Cabinets of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.[2]

Samuel Dexter, Jr. married on 28 Jun 1748 in Boston, Massachusetts to Hannah Sigourney [daughter of Mary (Germaine) and Andrew Sigourney].

From 1764 to 1768 he was a Representative from Dedham to the General Court.

From 1766 to 1774 he was elected to the Council each year.

He was a merchant in Boston, MA and distinguished himself in the struggles between the Crown and people of Massachusetts, previous to the Revolution; was several times elected to the Council, and as often rejected by the Royal Governor of the Province. Towards the close of his life, he retired altogether from public affairs, and engaged in an investigation of the great doctrines of Theology. Upon his legacy to Harvard University, the Dexter Lectureship has been established.
