Elena Ivanovna Diakonovna, known as "Gala" was the wife and muse of painter Salvador Dalí.
Born in Kazan on September 7, 1894 (old style: 16 August 1894), she was the daughter of Ivan Diakonov and Antonina Deoulina.. She was the wife of poet Paul Éluard from 1917 to 1931, the lover of painter Max Ernst, and finally married Dalí in 1932. She died in 1982 in Port Ligat, Spain.
Elena Diakonova (rendered as "Hélène Diakonoff" in French) married Eugène Émile Paul Grindel (known as Paul Éluard) on 21 February 1917 in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. The marriage act states that she was born on 26 August 1894 in Kazan, the daughter of Ivan Diakonoff (Diakonov) and Antonina Deoulina. The couple was divorced on 15 July 1931 per judgment given by the Tribunal Civil de la Seine, transcribed on 15 December 1931.
