Biography

Doctor Houston Dial ( Dock ) son of Franklin Jackson Dial, was born Dec. 28,1873, in Coweta County, Georgia. He married Martha Jane (Mattie) Owen in Georgia, and moved to Cullman County, Alabama. (Mattie Owen and Dollie Frances Owen were sisters that married brothers, William Hinton Dial and Dock Dial.) Dock was 6 ft. 7 inches tall with a slender build, and wore size 13 shoes.

There's an account of Doctor Houston and his brother, William Hinton Dial being thrown out from a Baptist church for starting a fight. The brothers later returned to the church as members, and both brothers wound up marrying daughters of the pastor, Charles Abbot Owen.[1]

His occupation was listed as a farmer on his World War I Draft Registration Card, but his family remembers him working in the woods cutting timber for the sawmills[2].

His nieces said that he was like a big kid playing with them and they all loved him dearly. He always wore a giant black hat.
