MARGARET DIAMOND 1828 - 1917

Margaret Diamond was educated in The Royal Military Asylum, Chelsea, London; admitted to the school on the 27th September 1834. She was five years old, her father's regiment is listed as "Military Labourers". The R.M.A. was a boarding school for orphaned children of the army, they stayed in school until they were 14 years old, when they were discharged to apprenticeships. Margaret Diamond was discharged from the Royal Military Asylum to Thomas Henry Hartley of Yeoman’s Close on the 23rd November 1842 as a "domestic servant" fulfilling the requirement that the children be taught a trade, though in fact simply taking her place in the family home. [1]

Immigration records tell us that Margaret Diamond was nineteen years old, a house servant who could read and write, Church of England, from Middlesex London with no relatives in the Colony, when she immigrated to Australia with her sister and brother-in-law Sarah and Richard Russell on the ship Walmer Castle in 1848.

Margaret Diamond married William Elliot on the 16th August 1854, in St.Lawrence Church of England Sydney. Was this William Elliot known to the family in London? When he left the R.M.A. in Chelsea in 1844, Margaret’s younger brother, Alexander Diamond was apprenticed to William Elliot a tailor in Yeoman’s Road Brompton. The Diamonds were then living at 9 Yeoman’s Row.

Margaret Elliott died in Sydney aged 88 on the 18th February 1917 and was buried in the Old Church of England section of Rookwood Cemetery, section 4 row 3, plots 703 & 704.
