Biography

Juan Diaz Y Santana was born around 1894 in Barrio Montones, Las Piedras, Puerto Rico to Calixto Diaz Y Rodriguez, a farmer, and his wife, Dolores Santana Y Rosario. He was one of at least 10 children born to his parents, one of whom must have died young.[1] Calixto is listed as farming his own land in the 1910 Census, but as a farm worker in the 1920 and 1930 Census, so they must have lost their farm.[2] [3] [4] Juan did attend public school and was literate, which by no means was common in that time and place.[5]

There is a record of a Juan Diaz Y Santana with a World War I Draft Registration Card, so he might have served in that war.[6]

The 1930 Census lists Leonarda Mojica Y Lebrón as joined with Juan in a consensual contract. She's listed as only 20 years old, so it's unlikely she's the mother of his seven-year-old Pedro, who carries the Diaz name.[7] At this time his daughter Daniela has her mother's surname, though her birth record lists her father's as well.[8][9] So there might have been a previous marriage, and Juan and Leonarda might have later been formally married, especially since she's listed as "de Diaz" in the 1935 Social and Population Schedules. [10] There are records of two other children born to the couple not listed on the 1930 census, Hipolito, born in 1926 and Juan Bautista in 1927.[11] Juan Bautista died in infancy so Hipolito might have as well, which would explain why they weren't living with their parents in 1930.[12] Juan and Leonarda's child, Angel Luis born in 1933, lived for little more than a month.[13]

Juan Diaz Y Santana died on 10 August 1934. [14] Leonarda moved in with her parents and Juan's 3 surviving children, Daniela, age 7, Juana, age 3, and Hayda just one year old.[15]
