Biography

Research Notes

Among the myths perpetuated about Harmon Dick and his family is the following ghost story:

The eldest son of Harmon Dick, a larger than life six-foot two, 238 pound former Hessian soldier, was the first in the community at Roaring Spring stricken with a mysterious rampant disease in 1786. This son was supposedly named Jacob and died as a teenager that same year. The epidemic continued for 14 years, leaving no family untouched. Exasperated and superstitious, the community dug up the grave of young Jacob Dick and found the corpse not deteriorated at all, but the hair had grown long and was white and the teenage also had a long white beard (but with face of a child) - then suddenly the corpse disintegrated into dust. The villagers reburied the body and the illness suddenly stopped spreading.

The above is the likely source for the misconception that Harmon had two sons named Jacob. However, no evidence supports this and it is very unlikely that he would name a son after another who had survived well into his teens.
