Biography

William was born in 1837. He passed away in 1921 and is buried in Block 1. Plot 65 of the Portobello Cemetery, Dunedin, New Zealand

He arrived in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand in 1861 aboard the Chile with his wife Helen and family. An accomplished stonemason, he was responsible for the stonework on Larnach's Castle (Dick, Page & Co) , First Church Knox Church, Otago Boys High School and the Municipal Chambers.and a number of other stone buildings including lime kilns on the Peninsula.First Church, His brother John Gilson Dick worked with him on these projects.

They worked beyond Dunedin too: a bridge in Thames Street, Oamaru (before the railway was laid) – the walked there, a church al Hampden. the Seacliff Mental Hospital and an imposing residence at Otanomomo for William Telford who purchased the property in 1867 They also worked on the Seacliff Mental Asylum which became the largest employer in the Blueskin Bay area when it opened in the 1880s

The family took up residence in Sandymount on the Otago Peninsula.
