Biography

Flag of Huntingdonshire (adopted 2009)
Thomas Dickens Esq was born in Huntingdonshire, England.

By way of background, Thomas Dicken's father, Rev Samuel Dickens , was educated at Kings College with an MA in 1719. He was Rector at Hemingford Abbots from 1714-1748. [1][2]

Thomas Dicken was born 1 October 1721 and baptised on 27 October, 1721 at Hemingford Abbots, Huntingdonshire, England.[3] His parents were Samuel Dickens and Mary Hildesley. Their first child was Susanna Dicken, born in 1714.

Thomas was the brother of Charles Dickens (or Dicken).[4]

Thomas was admitted to Charterhouse School in 1731, and was made an apprentice in 1730.[4] He matriculated from Christchurch in 1739, BA 1742/3, MA 1746.[4] A list of Oxford University alumni indicated that he matriculated from Christ Church on 1 June 1739 at age 17, BA 12 March 1742-43, MA 1746.[5]

Thomas married Elizabeth Wright on 2 May 1759 at St. George-Tombland, Norwich, Norfolk, England.[6] Another source states that the couple were married on 2 April 1759 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, but the handwritten document actually states May 2, 1759, married by license.[7]

Thomas and Elizabeth's first child was Mark Hildesley Dickens, born 23 April 1760 and baptised on 2 June 1760 at St. Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone Road, London, England. [8]

Their daughter Mary Elizabeth Dickens was born on 21 October, 1762 and was baptised at St. Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone Road, London, England on 21 November 1762.[9]

Their second son, Lt.-Gen. Sir Samuel Trevor Dickens was born around 1764.[10][11] His death was registered at Ipswich, England, United Kingdom in December 1847.[12]

Their birth date of their daughter Ann Margaret Dickens, is uncertain. Church transcripts say she was buried at Little Fransham on June 14, 1811, aged 43 years.[13] This suggests Ann Margaret Dickens was born around 1768. However, another source says that Anne Margaret died 9 June 1811 aged 40 years. This was an inscription on a tablet in the church Nave at Parva Fransham, dedicated by her brother, Lieut.-General Sir Samuel Trevor Dickens, K.C.H.[14]

Their daughter Hester Hildesley (or Hilsley) Dickens was born around 1772 but no official record was found to verify this. The suggested date of birth comes from a memorial in St. Nicholas Church.[14]

The fourth daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth was Elizabeth Mary, born on 9 Jan 1774 and baptised on 5 Feb 1774 at St. Nicholas Church, East Dereham, Norfolk, England.[15]

Children of Thomas and Elizabeth recognized in the same church Nave by Lieut.-General Sir Samuel Trevor Dickens, K.C.H. These include Mary Elizabeth, who died 17 September 1837, aged 75, Catherine, who died 10 February 1844, aged 64, Hester Hildesley, who died 11 February 1844, aged 72, Eliza Mary, who died 6 June 1832, aged 59, and Lieut.-Colonel Thomas Mark Dickens, born April 23, 1786, died 2 March 1832.[14]

Thomas final rank in the military was Lieutenant-Colonel in the first regiment of Foot Guards.[16]

Thomas died at Little Fransham, Norfolk on 21 September 1789 and was buried there. His will was dated 24 May 1788, proved 10 October 1789 by his widow, Elizabeth Dickens. [4] [17]Another source states that Lieut. Colonel Thomas Dickens was buried at Little Dunham, Norfolk on 23 September 1789.[18] These two villages are less than four miles apart. His date of death was noted on a tablet in the Nave of Parva Fransham, dedicated by his son, Lieut.-General Sir Samuel Trevor Dickens, K.C.H.[14]

In his will, Thomas left land in Gressenhall, Norfolk, and a silver fluted tankard to his son Mark Dickens, and he left a pair of gold mounted double barrel pistols and a silver chased two handled cup to his son Samuel Dickens. His four eldest daughters and his wife received money.[17]

Thomas' brother Charles posthumously published a 28 page poem written by Thomas, dedicated to His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester. Included with the poem is a genealogy which describes the connection between Thomas and King Edward III.[19]
