Biography

Harold Edington Dickens was born on 23 September 1893, a son to John William Edington Dickens and Rebecca Maggs in Pill, Easton In Gordano, Somerset.[1][2] He was descended from families who made their living as river pilots in Pill, guiding shipping through the Bristol Channel and the River Avon to the city of Bristol.

In the 1901 census Harold (age 7) was living in Easton in Gordano and St George, Somerset, England. Relation to Head: Son.[2]

In the 1911 census Harold (age 17) was living in Easton in Gordano, Somerset, England. Marital Status: Single. Relation to Head of House: Son.[3]

In WWI Harold served in the military from 1914 to 1920. He served in the Gloucestershire Regiment, 2/98th Infantry Indian Army.[4]

In the 1921 census Harold (age 27), Lieutenant Indian Army, Home On Furlough, was the single son of John William Edington Dickens in Caspian Villa Heywood Road, Easton in Gordano, Somerset, England.[8]

When Harold was 28 he married Louisa Annie Black on 21 September 1922 in Murree, Bengal, India. The couple had 2 children: Elizabeth L Dickens and Diana Grace Dickens.[9]

Harold departed Bombay on 22 October 1922 and arrived in Sydney, Australia on 25 October 1922.[10] He moved to Australia as part of the "Soldier Settler" program where officers in the British Army were encouraged to emigrate by the offer of free land.

H.E. was mentioned in a newspaper article on 12 June 1923 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[11]

In 1924 Harold (age about 30) was living in Balmoral, Wannon, Victoria, Australia.[12]

The couple had their only two children, two daughters, while living in Australia.

Their first child, Elizabeth, was born on 6 October 1924. This was mentioned in a newspaper article on 11 October 1924 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[13] DICKENS. –On the 6th October, at St. Ronan's private hospital, Hamilton, to the wife of Capt. H. E. Dickens, of Kongbool, Balmoral – a daughter. (Indian papers please copy.)

In 1927 Harold (age about 33) was living in St Kilda Central, Balaclava, Victoria, Australia.[14]

Harold departed Australia in January 1928 and arrived in London, England on 5 February 1928.[15]

In 1953 Harold (age about 59) was living in Loughborough, Leicestershire. 1 Outwoods Road. Departmental Manager, Manufacturing Chemists.

When Harold was 61 he married Margaret Lea Taylor on 10 September 1955 in Loughborough, Leicestershire.[16]

Harold departed Montréal, Québec, Canada on 5 August 1960 and arrived in Liverpool, England on 5 August 1960.[17]

Harold died at the age of 92 on 4 October 1985 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England. At Manson House, Northgate Street, Bury St. Edmunds.[18][19]
