Joseph married Dora Pope on 17 January 1895 in Jackson, Florida, United States.^[1] In the 1900 census Joe (age 25) was the married head of household in Jackson, Florida, United States.^[2]

In the 1920 census Joe (age 45) was the married head of household in Cottondale, Jackson, Florida, United States.^[3]

In the 1930 census Joseph (age 55) was the married head of household in Cottondale, Jackson, Florida, United States. Two young grandchildren were living with the couple, but were actually Joseph's brother Will's grandchildren.^[4]

In the 1940 census Joe (age 67) was the married head of household in Election Precinct 15 Cottondale, Jackson, Florida, United States. Their 20 year old grandson (actually grandnephew), Leon Dickens, was still living with them.^[5]

Joe died in April 1961 in Jackson, Florida, United States.^[6] Burial was in the Bethlehem A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Marianna, Jackson County, Florida.^[7]
