Biography

Alfred was born in 1822. He was the son of John Dickens and Elizabeth Barrow. He was baptised on 3 April 1822. He was one of the younger brothers of Charles Dickens, the writer.

When he was two years old, his father John Dickens went to Debtors' Prison, and his mother took the two boys, Frederick aged 4, and Alfred, aged 2, to Marshalsea to reside there while John was imprisoned there. John Dickens was released after three months, but that was not the end of money troubles for the family.

Alfred's older brother Charles sought help from a friend to find him a position as an engineer. Alfred then found employment with Malton & Driffield Railway. At the relatively young age of 22 Alfred was Resident Engineer at Malton, supervising railway construction for the contractor.

On 16 May 1846 he married Helen Dobson, daughter of the stationmaster at Strensall. They had five children.

In 1855 he was a witness in a trial in relation to the nuisance caused from dung at a wharf, and in his testimony identified himself as a Railway engineer.

Of the siblings of Charles Dickens, he was the only one to be successful in life.

He passed away in 1860, having died from pleurisy at the Mosely Arms Inn in Manchester. His estate went to his wife, who survived him. His residence at the time of his death was Lawn Cottage, West End Hampstead.

He was buried at Highgate Cemetery, near his father. His brother, Charles, is also buried there.
