Biography

George Dickey was born 26 April 1776 in Tyron County, North Carolina, to George Dickey and Martha Johnson. About 1803, he married Hannah Taylor. They made their home in Rutherford County, North Carolina, until 1820.

On 20 October 1820, he purchased 120 acres of section 18, district 11, on the Tennessee River in what was then Haywood County, North Carolina, but was later Macon County.[1] He sold this land to James Whitaker on 25 March 1829 for $400.00, but he continued to live in the area.[2]

On 4 October 1835, George Dickey was baptized and received into membership of Franklin Baptist Church in Macon County, North Carolina. He was granted a letter on of dismissal on 26 December 1835.[3]

In 1840, he purchased land in what was then Gilmer County, Georgia, but later became Fannin County. He died there on 15 September 1842 and is buried in the Dickey Cemetery on Hogback Mountain with his wife Hannah and a number of people they enslaved.[4] On 12 November 1842, the heirs of George Dickey signed off that they were satisfied with the disposition of his real estate. The heirs were J. W. Henry and his wife Martha, John Russell and his wife Nancy, E. M. Hall and his wife Miriam, B. K. Dickey, George W. Dickey, Joshua T. Dickey, and John B. Dickey who was the administrator.[5]

Research Notes

Despite appearing with the middle name Wherry in many online family trees, there is no evidence that he had a middle name. He was occasionally referred to in primary source documents as George Dickey, Sr., to differentiate him from his son George Wherry Dickey, but he himself always appeared with no middle name or middle initial.

He was the second great grandfather of author James Lafayette Dickey.
