Biography

Scottish flag
Hugh Dickie was born in Scotland.

Hugh Bankhead Dickie was born on February 23rd, 1865 to Hugh and Ann Dickie in Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland[1][2]. Hugh was their 3rd son and 8th child of 11. Hugh's middle name was likely for his Great Grandfather (on his Mother's side), Hugh Bankhead.

In 1871, Hugh was going to school and living at home with his parents and seven of his siblings on Loudo(u)n Street in Mauchline[3].

Hugh was not living in his parent's home at the time of the 1881 Census[4]. He was 16 in 1881 and may have been away at school or living on his own.

Hugh married Annie Davidson in Mauchline on October 12th, 1888[5]. Hugh and Annie were blessed with the following children:

Hugh (b. 1889, Mauchline)[6][7][8]
Joseph D. (b. 1890, Mauchline)[6][7][8]
Matthew (b. 1892, Bridgeton)[9]
Annie (b. 1894, Glasgow)[7][8]
John (b. 1897, Rutherglen)[7][8]
Robert (b. 1900, Rutherglen)[7][8]
Margaret (b. 1905, Rutherglen)[8]

In 1891, Hugh, Annie and two of their children, Hugh and Joseph D. were living on Norman Street in Bridgeton, Lanarkshire[6]. Hugh was working as a chairmaker. They had a 23 year old boarder named Thomas Dickie (Hugh's younger brother) and a 25 year old boarder named George Templeton. Both men were also chairmakers.

Still living in Lanarkshire, Hugh and Annie had added four more children to the family: Matthew, Annie, John, and Robert. Sadly, however, they lost Matthew in 1893 at the age of 2.

In 1901, Hugh was working as a chairmaker. He and Annie were living on Union Place in Rutherglen with their five children[7].

Hugh and Annie had another daughter in 1905, and named her Margaret.

In 1911, Hugh, Annie, and six of their children were living in the Gallowflat Ward of Rutherglen. Hugh was still working as a chairmaker. Annie indicated she had seven children (six were still living)[8].

Hugh Bankhead Dickie went to be with The Lord on January 5th, 1949. He died at his home in Rutherglen. His listed cause of death was senility. He was preceded in death by his wife Annie[10]. His final disposition is unknown.

Research Notes

1881 Census - Hugh is missing!
Hugh was missing from his parent's home in the 1881 Census[4]. He would have been 16. He could have either been away at school or living on his own. Most young males were working as young as 14 in 19th Century Scotland.
