William Henry Dickinson was born in 1857 at Oldham, Lancashire, the son of Benjamin Dickinson and Sarah Dickinson formerly Gartside. [1]
In the 1861 census the Dickinson family was living at Boardman St, Oldham. Father Benjamin, aged 33, was an operative cotton spinner. Mother Sarah, aged 32, was a cotton reeler. Siblings were Mary Ann, aged 11, a nurse girl, and John, aged 9, a cotton piecer. William H. was aged 3 years. [2]
Wm. Henry Dickinson was baptised on 29 November 1863 at the Parish of Prestwich and Chapelry of Hollinwood [St Margaret of Antioch, Hollinwood], the son of Benjamin and Sarah Dickinson of Boardman St, Oldhan. Father Benjamin was a spinner.William's date of birth was recorded as 6 November 1857. [3]
In 1871 the family was living at Hercules Green, Chadderton, Lancashire. Father Benjamin, aged 43, was a cotton self actor minder. Mother Sarah was aged 42. Sister Mary A., aged 21, was a cotton reeler. Brother John, aged 19, was also a self actor minder. William H. was aged 13 and still at school. Younger sister Hannah was aged 2. [4]
William Henry Dickinson married Ellen Hulton on 15 February 1880 at St. Matthew’s Church, Chadderton, Lancashire. Their marriage certificate recorded William was a bachelor aged 22 and a minder. His father was named as Benjamin Dickinson, a minder. Ellen was a spinster aged 18 and a speed tenter. Her father was named as Benjamin Hulton, an engineer. At the time of their marriage both gave their address as Middleton Junction. Their witnesses were James Hill and Sarah Hill. The latter signed with her mark. [5]
This couple had two daughters named Sarah Dickinson born 1880 and Jane Dickinson born 1887, both born in Chadderton.
Daughter Sarah Dickinson was baptised on 3 October 1880 at the Jumbo Primitive Methodist Church, Middleton, Lancashire. The family was then living at Hercules Green, Chadderton and William was a spinner. Sarah's date of birth was recorded as 27 August 1880. [6]
In the 1881 census William and Ellen were living at 3 Hercules Green, Chadderton. William, aged 23, and Ellen, aged 18, were both working as cotton operatives. Daughter Sarah was aged 7 months. [7]
In 1891 the family was living at 19 Joshua Lane, Middleton Junction, Lancashire. William, aged 33, was a cotton spinner. Ellen was aged 28 and daughters Sarah and Jane were aged 10 and 3 respectively. [8]
Daughter Sarah Dickinson died in 1900 aged 19 years. [9]
In the 1901 census the family was still at the same address. William, ten years older, was still working as a cotton spinner. Ellen was aged 38. Jane, aged 14, was working as a cotton reeler. [10]
In 1911, still at the same address, William, aged 53, was working as a piecer in the cotton spinning industry. Ellen was aged 48. Also living with them was married daughter Jane Heap, aged 23, her husband Lee Heap, aged 32, and their daughter Amy Heap, aged 3 years. Jane was still working as a reeler at a cotton mill and Lee was a bricklayer for a builder. [11]
In 1921 the family was still living at the same address. William Henry Dickinson, aged 63, was a cotton spinner minder at Grimshaw Lane Spinning Co., Middleton. Ellen was aged 58. Jane Heap, aged 34, was a reeler at Boundry Mill, Middleton. Lee Heap, aged 42, was a bricklayer for Robert Carlyle, contractors, of Old Trafford, Manchester. Amy was aged 14. [12]
William Henry Dickinson died on 3 April 1925 at the Royal Infirmary, Manchester, Lancashire aged 67 years of carcinoma - recti. His death certificate further recorded his usual address as 19 Joshua Lane, Middleton Junction. William had been a cotton mill labourer. The informant of his death was daughter Jane Heap of 19 Joshua Lane, Middleton Junction, who had been present at his death. [13]
Ellen Dickinson died on 15 May 1936 at 19 Joshua Lane, Middleton aged 73 years of myocardial degeneration and arterio sclerosis. Her death certificate further recorded she was the widow of William Henry Dickinson, an operative cotton spinner. The informant was daughter Jane Heap, of the same address, who was present at the death. [14]
