Charles James Dickinson was born in about 1856 in Castleford, Yorkshire. He was the son of Thomas Dickinson and Lucy Ather Dickinson. He was christened on 25 Oct 1856 in Pontefract, Yorkshire.

By 1861, Charles' family had moved to St Helens, Lancashire.

Charles married Sarah Vose on 8 Dec 1880 at St John's Church in Ravenhead, St Helens.

By April 3rd 1881, Charles and Sarah were living at 20 Raglan Street, Eccleston, St Helens. Charles was working as a blacksmith's labourer.

By April 5th 1891, they had moved to St Helens Road, Eccleston. Charles was working as a general labourer, and they had two children - "Catherine" aged 6 (presumably Elizabeth Ellen), and Charles aged 2.

By March 31st 1901, they were living at 74 Dunriding Road in Eccleston. Charles was now a furnaceman, and there were five children - Elizabeth Ellen, now 16 and not in paid employment; Charles (12), Lucy (9), Robert (6), and Frank (1). The middle three were in school.

By April 2nd 1911, Charles was still a furnace attendant. Elizabeth Ellen was still single and not in paid employment; Charles junior, now 22, was working as a carter; Lucy, now 19, was a dressmaker working from home; Robert, now 15, was an apprentice boilermaker. Frank (11) and Miriam (9) were too young to be working.
