Biography

Scottish flag
Agnes Dickson was born in Scotland.

Agnes Dickson was born May 28, 1789, at Garvald, Scotland, and was baptised there on June 5, 1789. She was the daughter of Archibald Dickson and Janet Robertson.[1]

Sometime between 1792 and 1794, her family moved from Garvald to Yester.[2][3]

In 1814 in Yester parish, Scotland, a proclamation was made for the marriage of Edward Finlay and Agnes Dickson. Although the parish register provided only the year, based on the surrounding entries the proclamation likely occurred in either October or November. The register did state that both were from Yester parish.[4][5]

Edward Finlay and Agnes Dickson had two children:

  • Richard Finlay, born March 18, 1815, and baptised April 16, 1815, in Yester, Scotland. The witnesses were Wm. Wood and M. Winter.[6]
  • Janet Finlay, born March 30, 1818, and baptised April 28, 1818, in Yester, Scotland. The witnesses were M. Finlay and A. Barclay.[7]

In the 1841 census, at Inglisfield, Yester parish, Scotland, Agness Finlay (age 48) was enumerated with her husband Edward Finlay (age 48, agricultural laborer) and their daughter Jannet Finlay (age 22). All three were recorded as being born in East Lothian county.[8]

The family has not yet been located in the 1851 census.

The death of Agnes Dickson likely occurred before 1861, as in that year her husband Edward Finlay (age 69, shepherd, born in Yester) was enumerated at Eaglescairnie in Bolton parish with their daughter Janet Finlay (age 40, born in Yester) and granddaughter Agnes Trotter (age 19, born in Yester).[9]

Research Notes

Confusion with the Agnes Dickson born in Ormiston

Multiple internet trees[10] make this Agnes Dickson, wife of Edward Finlay, the daughter of George Dickson and Janet Bell, who was born in Ormiston on February 16, 1794.[11][12] (In fact, this Wikitree page previously made this connection.) But that Agnes Dickson married Charles Whitehead in Ormiston on December 30, 1816, and the Ormiston parish register states that both were from Ormiston.[13] The Yester parish register states specifically that the Agnes Dickson who married Edward Finlay was from Yester.[4] Although the 1841 census said Edward Finlay and Agnes Dickson were both age 48, this was certainly incorrect for Edward Finlay who is known to be born in 1791,[14] and therefore the age of Agnes Dickson can only be considered approximate. Furthermore, Janet Bell appointed several individuals to be trustees of her estate, among them was Charles Whitehead.[15] In 1838 and 1839 the trustees of Janet Bell negotiated a lease with the Earl of Hopetoun for six acres of land in Ormiston for the duration of three lives, among them was Nicholas Mason Whitehead, son of Charles Whitehead and Agnes Dickson.[16][17] Therefore Agnes Dickson of Ormiston, daughter of George Dickson and Janet Bell, married Charles Whitehead and NOT Edward Finlay.

Confusion with the Agnes Dickson who married William Hogarth

At least one internet tree, and the artificial intelligence used by at least one genealogical software company, make this Agnes Dickson, daughter of Archibald Dickson and Janet Robertson, the wife of William Hogarth. In 1843 in Edinburgh, there was a marriage proclamation for "William Hogarth, Baker, residing No 4 Mansfield Place" and Agnes Dickson, "Daughter of Archibald Dickson also Baker, Dunbar".[18] The register of Warriston cemetery, Edinburgh, shows Agnes Dickson, "widow of Hogarth", died June 23, 1847, at age 46, and her birthplace was given as Dunbar.[19] The death on June 14, 1845 of her husband William Hogarth is recorded in the St. Cuthberts cemetery register, with residence 4 Mansfield Place and age 42 years.[20] On May 10, 1801, the Dunbar parish register recorded the baptism of Agnes Elizabeth Dickson, born May 5, 1801, the "daughter of Archibald Dickson baker in Dunbar and Elizabeth Walker his wife".[21] So the Agnes Dickson who married William Hogarth was NOT the daughter of Archibald Dickson and Janet Robertson.
