James was born in 1840. He is the son of William Dickson and Sally McCage.

13 July 1882, Perry County, Tennessee, marriage no. 90, J. B. Dickson, age 42, born Lick Creek, resident of Cypress Creek, married J. P. Dickson, age 28, born Lick Creek, resident of Marsh Creek. Married by E. T. Ledbetter, M.G.[2]

Julia and James had 6 children: Leander, Matthew K, Baxter, Grover, Donnie Bill, and Lizzie.[3]

James served in Captain Hull's Regiment #42, Tennessee Infantry Company K after enlisting in 1862 at Lobellville, Tennessee. He was imprisoned at Rock Island, Illinois. He returned home from the war about 1864. Julia Paralee Dickson, widow of soldier James B. Dickson, filed pension application W8034, Perry County, Tennessee about 1924.[3]

James passed away on October 15, 1902.[3] He was buried at Starbuck Cemetery, Pope, Perry County, Tennessee.[4]
