Peter Dickson was born about 1817 according to the Family New Testament[1], in Greenock, Scotland according to the birth certificate of his son Thomas. He was the son of William Dickson and Janet Cumming. He was at least the second son with William being born in 1815, but part of the page of the New Testament has been cut off. He had a sister Jean born in 1825. His father remarried after his mother died in 1829 and had four more children, giving Peter four half siblings.
Nothing much is known about his life until he married in 1839. However, he may have lived in Castleblayney, Muckno, Ulster after his mother died as he married two women from that place. Their fathers are listed in Slater's Commercial Directory of Ireland 1846, Ulster, Castle-Blayney[2]. And there are men by the name of Dickson and with family first names listed in that same Directory.
Life in England
Peter was a shipwright of full age when he married Ann Lowey (Lowry, Lawry and other spellings), a minor, on 16 December 1839 at St. Peter's, Liverpool[3]. His father was named as William Dickson mariner and hers as Robert Lowry woollen draper[4]. At about this time Ann gave birth to a son Robert. He was named for his mother's father. They had at least four more children.
He was living with his wife, his son Robert and Hannah Lockhart at Porter Street Walker's Building, Liverpool, Lancashire at the time of the 1841 Census[14]. His age was given as 23 and his birth place as Scotland.
His wife Ann must have died in 1849, as he married Hannah Lockhart on 10 September 1849 at Saint Luke, Liverpool, Lancashire[15] just after she had given birth to her first child. It is uncertain whether this was fathered by Peter, but the son died about the time of the wedding. Peter and Hannah had nine children, only four of whom survived to adulthood. The first four were born in Liverpool, England and the rest in Williamstown, Colony of Victoria. The births from Hannah on were recorded in the Family New Testament[1].
Peter Dickson migrated from England to Colony of Victoria.
Peter emigrated from Liverpool with his wife Hannah and only surviving son, Peter, on the Eagle leaving on 23 July 1856[22] and arriving at Melbourne on 28 October 1856[23]. He was a carpenter. He settled at Williamstown.
Peter died on 29 September 1880 at Williamstown[24], and his death was registered in Victoria[25]. He was buried in the Williamstown Cemetery[26]. Probate was granted to his son Thomas Dickson on 21 October 1880[27].
Research Notes
No record of his birth has been found. The entry in the Family New Testament is extremely faint giving only a year. The date is close enough to that of 1818 taken from the 1841 Census and death certificate.
Spelling of the name varies with Dixon on some records, although Dickson is the correct spelling. It is strange that he used the alternative spelling of Dixon on his second marriage when Hannah correctly used Dickson two months before for her son. It is as though he wanted to be a different person.
His death certificate makes no mention of his children from his first marriage. The assumption is that Robert and William survived, and a likely candidate for the latter has been found although with no proof. Otherwise, the names Robert and William would have been reused for his children with Hannah.
No record of the death of his first wife has yet been found. She may have died in Ireland.
