Obituary states he was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1866 .
Research Note
His birth was not registered until 1907, because his parents did not marry until March 1867, so Mary was unmarried at the time of his birth. A late registration was common when the unmarried couple intended to marry soon after. The Cable family came to NZ on board the Paria, which left Glasgow on Oct 11 1865, and Arrived at Port Chalmers, in January 1866, after dropping some passengers off at Bluff. George was born a few months later, meaning Mary may have pregnant when the ship left Glasgow.
Need to see full passenger list for the Paria to confirm his father Gavin Dickson was also aboard. If not , there's the possiblity he was not George's natural father. Note: it is NOT the Paria's 1867 voyage into Lyttleton
See also a possible connection to the Resolute arriving into Port Chalmers in March 1864? [1] Is this when Gavin came to NZ?
