Biography

David was born in 1921. He is the son of James Dickson and Mary Gibson.

The death of David M. Dickson, a lifelong resident of Fredericton, occurred on June 18th, 2014 in his 94th year. Born February 23rd, 1921, the son of J. Bacon Dickson and Mary Louise Gibson Dickson. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 51 years Lorna Vera Wills Dickson (whom he married in Brighton, England in April 1942); by his stepmother Helen Winter Dickson; by his sister Marjorie Dickson Parker (Ernest); and by his daughter-in-law Sherron Dickson (wife of Julian). He is survived by two sons Andrew B. (Robin) of Nasonworth and Julian A. G. of Fredericton; by his grandsons Caleb (Dawn) of Charters Settlement and Matthew of Toronto; by a great-granddaughter Addyson; by nieces Nan (Brian) Pettipas and Janet Mersey; by nephew Rick (Donna) Parker and their family; and by a number of cousins, as well as a host of friends, both in Canada and abroad. He was educated at Charlotte Street School and Fredericton High School, graduating in 1938 as President of his class, and then enrolled at the University of New Brunswick. He enlisted at age 19 in the Canadian Army from C.O.T.C. as a Second Lieutenant. He was posted overseas to the United Kingdom in 1940, serving initially with the Carleton and York Regiment and then subsequently with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders Regiment. He landed on Juno Beach in Normandy on June 6th, 1944; was seriously wounded in March 1945 at Bienen, Germany; and discharged from the Army in September 1945 with the rank of Major. He returned to Canada and enrolled at the University of New Brunswick Law School, graduating, and admitted to the New Brunswick Barristers Society, in August 1947, and then returned to London, England to study at the University of London as a Beaverbrook Overseas Scholar. He practiced law in Fredericton from 1948 to 1964, initially with the firm “Winslow, Hughes & Dickson” and then subsequently “Hughes, Dickson, Cochrane & Stevenson”. As well, he served as Magistrate for the Town of Marysville, was a founding Officer and Director of Crabbe Mountain Winter Park, Town Solicitor for the Town of Oromocto and its corporation, served as President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch Number 4, and also of the Fredericton Canadian Club, was a Director and Canadian Vice-President of the Miramichi Salmon Association, a former Chair of the Board of Trustees of St. Paul’s United Church, served as Secretary of the New Brunswick Liberal Association and Secretary of the National Liberal Federation of Canada, and also ran as a candidate in three Federal elections in York-Sunbury Constituency. He was appointed as a Judge to the Supreme Court of New Brunswick, Trial Division, in December 1964. He also served as a Member of the Court Marshall Appeal Court. Justice Dickson retired from the Court of Queen’s Bench of New Brunswick in 1994. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive condolences at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton, on Tuesday, June 24th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, York Street, on Wednesday, June 25th at 3:00 p.m. with The Rev. Bob Jones officiating, assisted by The Rev. Gil MacKenzie. Reception to follow in the Fraser Memorial Hall. Private interment of ashes will take place at a later date in the Dickson Family Plot in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery, Woodstock Road. In lieu of flowers, please do a kind act for any person in need as a tribute to and in memory of Justice Dickson. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent health care provided by Dr. Tom Barry and his staff over a number of years, as well as Dr. Joseph Harrison and Dr. Jeff Moore. The family also thanks the staff at the Veterans Health Unit of Horizon Health Network for the exemplary and compassionate care during the last days of Dad’s life. A substantial debt of gratitude is owed forever.
