Biography
Robert Dickson Jr was born in Scotland.
Robert Jr was born on 22 March 1790 at Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He was the son of Robert Dickson and Jean Anderson[1], both of Lanarkshire. His mother died before 1800 while he was still a child as his father remarried Jean Lindsay that year on 15 August at Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire[2].
Robert Dickson Jr migrated from Scotland to united States.
He emigrated to the United States with his father, his step-mother and possibly half siblings in 1803[1].
In 1820 he was living at Ryegate, Caledonia, Vermont with one other adult (his wife aged under 26)[15]. He was aged over 26 and engaged in agriculture. He was in the same place in 1840 with five males and four females under 20, one female aged 20 to 30 and one 40 to 50[16]. He was aged under 60. Six people were engaged in agriculture. In 1850 he was living with his wife Jennet (50) and their seven children - Margaret (24), David (23), William (21), Chester [Christian?] A (17), John C (15), Mary A (11) and George E (9) - at Ryegate, Caledonia, Vermont[17]. He was a farmer with real estate valued at $3300 aged 50 and had been born in Scotland.
His wife died on 24 April 1851[18][19]. On 21 August 1855 at Topsham, Vermont he married for the second time to Abigail (Abbie) Weed[20]. In 1860 he was living with his wife Abbie (50), his children - Mary (21) and George (18) - and a grandson James Nelson (1) still at Ryegate[21]. He was a farmer with real estate vaued at $4000 and personal property worth $400.
He died on 1 July 1862 aged 73 at Ryegate, Vermont[22]. He was buried in Blue Mountain Cemetery, Ryegate Corner, Caledonia County, Vermont[23].
Research Notes
The book on the history of Ryegate[1] give his date of birth as 12 March 1798. This does not match with his age at his death.
