Biography

Joseph was born in 1807. He was the son of Robert Dickson and Lavinia De Wolf.[1]

He married Lavinia Burnyeat Blair in 1835 and they had five children.[2]

He was enumerated in the 1838 census of Nova Scotia, farming in Onslow. With him were four females over fourteen, three males over fourteen, two females between six and thirteen, and one female under six.[3]

In 1861, Joseph was residing in Truro with a family consisting of 2 females 10-15, 2 single males 10-15, 1 single female 10-15, 2 single females 20-30, 2 single males 20-30, 1 married female 40-50 and 1 married male 50-60 [himself].[4]

He passed away about 1865, probably in Truro, where he had lived for some time.

  1. Emily Roach, b. 3 Mar 1837, m. 8 May 1868, John Harrison, d. 17 Apr 1890 in Los Angeles. The 26 Apr 1890 edition of The Times reported: "d. At residence of her brother, George E. Dickson, Los Angeles, California, 17th April, Emily Roach Harrison w/o John F. Harrison, formerly of San Francisco and eldest d/o late Joseph Dickson, Truro, N.S."
  2. Mary Campbell, b. 29 Aug 1839, m. 27 Jul 1867, Arthur Henry "Harry" Bourinot, d. 1911 in Sydney, Cape Breton.
  3. George Edward, b. 25 Jul 1841, d. 29 Nov 1900 in Los Angeles, California, res, San Francisco, California in 1880, age 38.
  4. Abigail Maude Archibald, b. 16 Mar 1845, m. 15 Aug 1870 in New York City, William Purves, d. 1929.
  5. Josephine Wicker, b. 2 Jun 1847, m. 12 Feb 1880, Stanislaus Remak, d. 3 May 1923 in Halifax. The 18 Mar 1880 edition of the Chignecto Post reported: "m. San Francisco, California, 12th ult., Church of the Advent, by Rt. Rev. William Ingraham, Bishop of California, Stanislaus Remak , Philadelphia, Pa., Barrister (late of U.S. Army) / Josephine Wicker Dickson youngest d/o late Joseph Dickson, Esq., Truro, N.S."
