Mrs. Rohweder Dead at 96
Mrs Margaret Rohweder, 96, early pioneer here, died at 1 a.m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. P. W. Froemke, 319 East Third Street. Death was due to the infirmities of age. Mrs Rohweder had been ill for about a year. She was a widow of the late well- known band and orchestra leader, Herman Rohweder, and was an early pioneer in both the state and the city.
She was born in Holstein, Germany, August 9, 1843, and came to America with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. George Dickman, in 1852, the family consisting of six children. Mrs Rohweder was the last member of the family. The voyage was made in a sailing vessel and took 36 days. The family located at Blue Island, Ill. In 1856 they moved to Greenwood Prairie, Wabasha County, and in 1863, she was married to Herman Rohweder. Their first home was built by Mr. Rohweder's father about 2 blocks west of Mankato avenue, on Sanborn Street, and is still standing. There were only a few scattered neighbors at the time.
They had two children, Doris W., who died when 3 years old, and Sophie (Mrs. Froemke). In 1884, Mr. Rohweder purchased the James Laird property, Third and Liberty Streets, now the Watkins company park, the pretentious homes of the early days. The spacious rooms were often covered with canvas for dancing to the music of Rohweder's orchestra. Mr. and Mrs. Rohweder celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1913. Mr. Rohweder died in 1921.
Survivors are her daughter; two grandchildren, Mrs. H. V. Teegarden, Winona, and Herman R. Froemke, Winona; one great grandchild, Patrica Ann Teegarden, and serveral nieces and nephews.
