Biography

Henry Diehl is the son of Josef Diehl, who immigrated from Germany and Magdalena Grimm.

For a presently unexplained reason he dropped the use of the given name Heinrich and adopted the use of the more English sounding name Richard.

Richard Deal sold land on Johnson Creek in Patrick County, Virginia in 1808. [1]

Richard Deal, a resident of Floyd County, Kentucky, was exempt from paying taxes in 1809 indicating he was over 65 years of age. [2]

A deed for Richard Deal in Fayette County, Kentucky 1810 is for the sale of land he owned in Patrick County, Virginia. [3]

Research

The proper spelling for the surname appears to be Diehl because it is of Germanic origin. Other spellings appear to have resulted from Americanization of the original name.

Various controversies over the ancestry of Richard Diehl/Deal/Deel etc. are explained below.

The first known ancestor for the Deel lineage was David Diel who came to America on the ship 'Favorite', Captain Nicholaus Volans from Hamburg, Germany. David moved to Washington County, Virginia from eastern Virginia then to Russell County Virginia, on Levisa River, now Buchanan County. He married Elizabeth Coleman

On Wikitree see: Willoughby Deel son of David Diel and Elizabeth Coleman. David son of Heinrich "Richard" Deale formerly Diehl and Mariam.

Further information on the Deal family was provided (without sources) in July 2018 from the research of James E. Long. David Deal is not David Dhiel. The David Dhiel from the Favorite stayed in PA. David Deal is the son of Richard Deal and Mariam (Unknown). This Richard is the son of Richard Deal and Susannah Winfield. This Richard is the son of Henry Deal/e out of the Tidewater area of VA.

Removed this person as a son of George Diehl Diehl-128 and Anna Catherine Bocher Bocher-2 as they are the grandparents and not the parents of Henry.
