John was the son of John Digby and Frances Pinckney. He was baptised at Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire on 22 September 1668, with his parents named as John and Frances in the parish register.[1][2]
He studied at Jesus College, Cambridge. He was Member of Parliament for Newark, Nottinghamshire from 1705 to 1708, and for Retford, Nottinghamshire from 1713 to 1722. He lived in Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. In 1721 he was included in a list of possible supporters sent to James Stuart the Pretender, who wrote to him on 2 September 1728 (after his death) to thank him for his zealous support.[3]
John married twice. His first wife was Ann Ayscoghe, whom he married in 1696 at Holy Trinity, Knightsbridge, London.[4]
His second wife was Jane Wharton on 23 July 1699.[3] A licence for their marriage was dated 17 July 1699. It describes him as a widower.[5] They had two sons and seven daughters, of whom all but John are named in their father's 1713/4 will:[6]

John died on 3 August 1728.[3] His will was dated 12 February 1713/4, but not proved until 2 August 1753, on the oath of his widow Jane, the only surviving executor.[6] A transcript of the will can be found here.
