Biography

Birth and Upbringing: George Digweed was born in 1906. [1] He was the son of George and Adha (nee Mitchinson) Digweed. George was baptised at All Saints, Hessle, Yorkshire on 14 March, 1906 [2] He had three siblings, John, Edith, Ella and Olive.
Own Family: George married Una MacWhirter on 4 April 1939 in Bulawayo and together they had a daughter, Naureen, b. 29 August 1940. [3] [4] They had a son, Richard John, b. 16 March 1942 at Bulawayo. [5]. A second daughter followed, Elizabeth Macushla b. 13 June 1944 also at Bulawayo. [6]
Migrations: He emigrated to Southern Rhodesia during 1930.
Occupation: Policeman – he joined the British South Africa Police in September 1930; Force No. 3213; George Digweed served until Oct 1961 when he left with the rank of Asst. Commissioner. His early service was spent in the Umtali district until he joined the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as a Probationer Detective in August, 1937. George was promoted to the rank of Detective Sergeant the following year and entered the CID Inspectorate in 1946. He was commissioned in the rank of Superintendent in 1953 and advanced to Chief Superintendent five years later. Mr Digweed was appointed Assistant Commissioner in March, 1960. He was at one time Officer Commanding CID in both the Midlands and Mashonaland Provinces. [7]
Honours and Awards: On 1 January 1958 he was awarded the Colonial Police Medal (CPM) for meritorious service [8]
Known Residences: Eastgate Hessle, Hessle, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (East Riding); [9]; Umtali, Manicaland, Salisbury, Mashonaland, Bulawayo, Matabeleland, Gwelo, Midlands, During his service with the CID Mr. Digweed lived and served served in most police districts and at many of the CID posts therein.
Demise: George Digweed died, aged 84, on 3 September 1990 at Harare; Harare Province, Zimbabwe
