Jacob is listed as being 28 with no real estate being owned and Ellen is aged 24. This family is enumerated right after Henry Dillon which is listed right under John Dillon. Henry Dillon is believed to be Ellen's brother since John is proven to be her father by her death certificate.

  • Ellen Felter (Wife) Age 24
  • Thomas G Felter (Son) Age 2

Marriage and Requested Divorce

Supporting documentation shows that Jacob Felter married Ellen Dillon prior to 1870. In "The Spirit of Democracy" publication out of Woodsfield, Ohio, there appears a legal notification in the 23 January, 30 January and 6 February 1877 editions. This notification is where Ellen Felter has filed a petition for a divorce from Jacob Felter. The notification states Jacob's whereabouts is unknown at this time and has been for more than 3 years. She is seeking a divorce on the grounds of the willful absence of her husband. The court will be hearing the case during the next term. She is represented by Pearson & Doherty, the attorneys for her. 2nd Marriage

Then on 28 Mar 1877, Henry Briggs and Ellen Felter attempted to obtain a marriage license in Monroe County, Ohio. The marriage license application states and was attested to by both Henry and Ellen that they were no closer than 2nd cousins. After the license was initially granted, it is crossed out and it is annotated their money was refunded and the License was denied because they were first cousins. This did not deter the determined pair as Henry presents himself in April of 1877 as requesting a marriage license to marry Ellen Felter.

Henry Briggs states they were both born in Monroe County, Ohio and are 24 years of age He further states Ellen is a resident of Tyler County, West Virginia when the application was made for a marriage license. He states her residence is Tyler County, West Virginia. There is no mention of relationship first or second cousins. It appears that Henry also gave the impression that Ellen Felter was never married previously as she is referred to as Miss. Ellen Felter.

Pension Application - Jacob Felter

Ellen made an application against Jacob's pension as a remarried widow on 16 Aug 1923. The service listed is Company D, Regiment 7, West Virginia Infantry. This would be for Jacob's service during the Civil War.
