Ellen was born on 7 Feb 1845 in Greenbrier, Ohio to John Dillon and Johanna Briggs. She passed away on 19 Jun 1931 in Perry Township, Monroe County, Ohio.
Ellen appears as the wife of Jacob Felter in the 1870 Census. They have a 2 year old son, Thomas, living with them. The family is listed as living in Perry Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Jacob is listed as being 28 with no real estate being owned and Ellen is aged 24. This family is enumerated right after Henry Dillon which is listed right under John Dillon. Henry Dillon is believed to be Ellen's brother since John is proven to be her father by her death certificate.
Supporting documentation shows that Jacob Felter married Ellen Dillon prior to 1870. In "The Spirit of Democracy" publication out of Woodsfield, Ohio, there appears a legal notification in the 23 January, 30 January and 6 February 1877 editions. This notification is where Ellen Felter has filed a petition for a divorce from Jacob Felter. The notification states Jacob's whereabouts is unknown at this time and has been for more than 3 years. She is seeking a divorce on the grounds of the willful absence of her husband. The court will be hearing the case during the next term. She is represented by Pearson & Doherty, the attorneys for her. Then on 28 Mar 1877, Henry Briggs and Ellen Felter attempted to obtain a marriage license in Monroe County, Ohio. The marriage license application states and was attested to by both Henry and Ellen that they were no closer than 2nd cousins. After the license was initially granted, it is crossed out and it is annotated their money was refunded and the License was denied because they were first cousins. This did not deter the determined pair as Henry presents himself in April of 1877 as requesting a marriage license to marry Ellen Felter.
Henry Briggs states they were both born in Monroe County, Ohio and are 24 years of age He further states Ellen is a resident of Tyler County, West Virginia when the application was made for a marriage license. He states her residence is Tyler County, West Virginia. There is no mention of relationship first or second cousins. It appears that Henry also gave the impression that Ellen Felter was never married previously as she is referred to as Miss. Ellen Felter.
Ellen made an application against Jacob's pension as a remarried widow on 16 Aug 1923. The service listed is Company D, Regiment 7, West Virginia Infantry. This would be for Jacob's service during the Civil War.
Ellen was aged 86 years, 4 months and 11 days at the time of her death on 19 Jun 1931. She had been under a physicians care from 6 to 18 Jun 1931. The cause of death was Cerebral Hemorrhage. Ellen is listed as being the widow of Henry Briggs. She was born in Greenbrier, Monroe County, Ohio on 7 Feb 1845. Her father is listed as being John Dillon with her mother being Peggy Johnson being born in Greenbrier, Ohio. The person providing the information is John Briggs, her son, of New Matamoras, Ohio. She was to be buried in Greenville Cemetery on 21 Jun 1931. She is buried with her second husband, Henry Briggs and they share a joint gravestone. Henry was born in 1852 and died in 1921.
