He was a master mariner and served on the paddle steamer Nelson[4], the paddle steamer Wallace[5] and then the steamer Kennedy in New Zealand waters.[6]
Prior to his death he lodged at Rose Lodge owned by Reubina Askew in Nelson.
He died while on board the Kennedy on 18 December 1880 while it was berthed near Westport, New Zealand.[7] An inquest was held and found he died of heart disease.[8]
He died intestate with no known relations in New Zealand.[9]
His funeral was on 21 December 1880 in Nelson.[10][11]
