Bartlett was born in 1839 in Haywood County, North Carolina. He was the son of Peter Dills and Elizabeth Parris. He passed away after 1886 and before 1 June 1900, probably in Swain County, North Carolina.
Bartlett married Elizabeth Ann Jones on 6 April 1861 in Jackson County, North Carolina.[1]
Bartlett served in the Civil War in the CSA. He enlisted in Company A, North Carolina 16th Infantry Regiment on 8 May 1862 and transferred to Company D, North Carolina 62nd Infantry Regiment on 5 October 1862. He mustered out on 30 November 1862 and transferred to Company K, North Carolina 39th Infantry Regiment. He mustered out of this regiment on 26 October 1863. He apparently returned home since his son, John Albert, was born ten months later. The 1880 census states Bartlett had a crippled arm. I have found no record that he was wounded in the war, but that would explain his being mustered out in 1863.
Note to other researchers: Bartlett was a common name in the Dills family at this time and in this area of North Carolina. As a result, there are confusions as to which Bartlett is which. Some online trees, particularly at ancestry.com, have married Elizabeth A. Jones to the wrong Bartlett.
This Bartlett is not Bartlett Jasper Dills, Jr., the son of Bartlett Jasper Dills and Susan Henson. That Bartlett married Ellender Parris in 1841. Our Bartlett is his nephew twice. Bartlett Jr. is Peter's brother and his wife Ellender is the sister of Elizabeth Parris, wife of Peter Dills and mother of our Bartlett. (Besides, Bartlett J. Jr. had enough wives without adding an incorrect one.)
He is not Bartlett S. Dills, son of Henry K. Dills and Susan Stratton. He married Nancy A. Patton in 1859 and moved to Catoosa County, Georgia.
Bartlett has married, reportedly in 1861, and in his household are wife, Elizabeth (Jones) Dills, and children: Rufus, Martha, John, Richard, William, and Lee. A small problem with the birth date for Rufus. He is listed as 11 years old, born 1859, but Bartlett was still at home with his mother on the 1860 census. Is the date wrong, or was Rufus born a little early?

Dills and his family.
