Biography
John Dingley, the ancestor of the Dingley family in America was born about 1608. He came from England to Lynn, Massachusetts, with a company of immigrants in 1637. The company soon removed to Sandwich (Cape Cod) whence he, with two associates, came to Marshfield, Mass. in 1640. Soon after, that town and Duxbury, Mass. were erected out of parts of old Plymouth.
John was admitted a freeman on June 5, 1644 and a lot of land was granted him by the town. John is named on the first Book of the Marshfield records as paying rates in 1643 and is styled Goodman Dingley. He was often chosen to fill offices in town.
"Richard Church sometimes of the town of Nawsett ... carpenter" sold to John Dingley of Marshfield, smith, his half-share in a parcel of land on 22 Oct 1650. The parcel was "a certain tract of upland and marsh meadow in the limits of Green's Harbor alias Marshfield." The other half-owner was Anthony Snow of Marshfield, felt-maker.[1]
His wife, Sarah, was not a Chillingsworth, and she may not have even been a Sarah! Her maiden name as well as date of marriage and death are unknown. The couple had at least five children.
1. John 2 - died in boyhood 1655
2. Jacob- born 1642, died 1691
3. Mary - who married Josiah, son of Capt. Miles Standish, and died in 1655 seven months after her marriage
4. Sarah - married William Ford in 1658 and died in 1727
5. Hannah - married Josiah Keen
In 1686, John gifted to his son, Jacob Dingley, his house and land, in consideration of the tender love and fatherly affection that I have and bear to my natural and well-beloved son.[2]
His estate was inventoried on 13 Mar 1689/90 by Anthony Snow, Japheth Turner and Nathaniel Winslow. "Jacob Dingley Son of the abovesaid Deceased" made oath to the inventory, the same day. On 18 Mar, 1689/90, "Ensigne William fford of Marshfield and Josiah Keane sen~r of Duxborough" each gave a bond of £30, as administrators 18 Mar 1689/90, and administration was granted to "William ffoord of Marshfield and Josiah Kean of Duxborough".[3][4]
There is a monument at the Winslow Cemetery, Marshfield, Plymouth, Massachusetts, which list John and Sarah, but this is a monument to the early settlers of Marshfield, and it is probable that they were not buried at that very site.
Notice of Disputed Ancestry
Much mistaken ancestry has been given to John and Sarah. The most recent and well-documented data was published in 1985 by Eugene A Stratton.[5] His research shows that there is no documentary evidence connecting John Dingley, the subject of this profile, and John Dingley, the son of Francis Dingley and Elizabeth Bigge. The probable dates of birth for the two Johns are different. Francis was entitled to used the term "Esquire" and and his sons were called "Gent.", while this John was a blacksmith and was called "Goodman," both of which would have been unlikely for the son of Francis. Also, John is not mentioned in Francis's will, and John of Marshfield was still living at the time the will was drafted and proved.
For these reasons, John is shown without parents. Please do not add parents. If you have information regarding John's disputed ancestry, please contact a Profile Manager or the Puritan Great Migration Project.
