Jane Distin was born in Sherford, Devon, England to William Distin and Jane (Lamble) Distin, and baptised there on 27 August 1797. ^[1][2] She had nine siblings: James, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, another James, Anne, John, and Elenor.

On Christmas Day 1818 (25 December), ^[3] Jane married Jacob Ball ^[4], and together the couple had nine children: John 1819, Jacob 1821, William 1823, Elizabeth 1826, Harriet 1828, James 1831, Samuel 1833, Joseph 1836, and Ann 1839.

In the 1841 census, ^[5] she is living at home with her husband and youngest children; in the 1851 census ^[6]she has taken her youngest son, Joseph 1836, and is visiting her sister Elenor, who is married to Joseph Webber (a slate merchant) and has six daughters. In the 1861 census ^[7] Jane, now a widow, is lodging with her own shopkeeper daughter Ann 1839, who is now married to Robert Patey, a farm labourer.

Aged 70 when she died^[8], Jane was buried in South Pool on 23 September 1867. ^[9][10]
