Maria was born 8 Jun 1821, the daughter of Christopher William and Elizabeth Dix nee Hickin. Their address was Gutter Lane and the father was an Engraver. She was baptised 1 Jul 1821 in St. John Zachary, London, London, England.[1]
The 1841 Census shows her living at St, Martin LeGrande with her mother, a Hosier and one brother.[2]
She married Alfred Cowles in St. Andrew Holborn 19 Jun 1842. The witnesses were Maria's siblings, Christopher John and Emma Catherine Dix. Alfred is listed as an Engraver "Artisan".[3]
It is interesting to note that Maria's brother James Charles named his first born James Cowles Dix.
The 1851 Census shows her and Alfred, an Engraver living with their child in Kennington Green.[4]
In 1871they are living at 390 Kennington road and Maria is a school mistress. Their four children are with them and two boys are engravers.[5]
Maria and Alfred lived in the Lambeth, Kennington area of London and she died in June 1878, at 24 Sunny Hill Streatham and buried 25 Jun.[6]
Her husband Alfred died in1883. They had four children.
