Biography

Flag of Staffordshire (adopted 2016)
Thomas Dix was born in Staffordshire, England.
Thomas was a Shoemaker.

Thomas Dix (1818-1870) was born in 1818 in Stowe-by-Chartley, Staffordshire, England (more commonly referred to as Stowe). He was the son of Joseph Dix and Mary Johnson and he was christened in the parish church at Stowe on the 15th February 1818. [1]

He is possibly the Thomas Dix who was a servant in the neighbouring hamlet of Amerton, half a mile away, in the 1841 census *see notes. [2]

He appears to have married 3 times. The first marriage was on the 26th October 1842 at St Philip's church in Liverpool to Ellen Shirley. He is recorded as a shoe dealer from Stowe, Staffordshire, son of Joseph Dix, a farmer and she a spinster from St James Street, Liverpool, daughter of a butcher, Joseph Shirley. [3] [4]
Other than this marriage entry, I can find no further information about Ellen Shirley or details of their marriage. (It is possible it was annulled for some reason or that Ellen died soon after but I cannot identify any death or any children of this marriage)

His next marriage was to Mary Ellen Hodgson on the 1st March 1847 at St Nicholas' church, Liverpool. There are some issues with the details recorded, in that Thomas was, like his father, Joseph, described as a farmer rather than a shoemaker and was also recorded as a bachelor. The couple both gave addresses on St James Street, which was likely a temporary address to fulfil the requirement of living "in the parish". [5] [6]

Children of Thomas Dix & Mary Ellen Hodgson:-

Margaret Mary (1847) [7]

The couple only had one child, Margaret, who was born 6 months later and christened on the 26th September 1847 at St Mary's church in West Derby when the couple lived in the parish and Thomas shown as a shoe manufacturer. [7]

Within the next couple of years they moved to Byrom Street, Liverpool. Whilst Thomas and Mary Ellen only had the one child together, Thomas did have another child, a son, William Henry, [8] by Ellen Hutton in 1849 whom he must have acknowledged as William bore his surname both at registration and subsequent christening on the 22nd July 1849 at St Stephen's, Liverpool. [8]

His wife, Mary Ellen, may have been sickly for a while but she died of typhus at Byrom Street in March 1850 and was buried in St Mary's Cemetery in Kirkdale, Liverpool aged 23 years. [9]
In the 1851 census, Thomas was recorded at his home/business premises on Byrom Street as a shoemaker and manager. Also recorded was Sarah Walton, an unmarried shop woman. Neither of his children were living there. (Mary was with her paternal grandparents in Stowe and William was with his mother, Ellen Hutton at her parents' address in Renshaw Street, Liverpool.

The widowed Thomas then married Sarah Walton on the 7th September 1851 at St Anne, Stanley (Liverpool). [10] [11]

Children of Thomas Dix & Sarah Walton:-

Elizabeth Ann (1853) [12]
Mary Ellen (1855) [13]
Emma (1858-1860)
Joseph (1860) [14]
Sarah Ann (1863)

It was only after the death of their 3rd child Emma, that the surviving children, Elizabeth, [12] Mary [13] & Joseph were christened in 1860 at St Thomas' church in Toxteth Park on the 23rd December 1860 by which time they were living in Toxteth Park on Dover Street. [14]

The 1861 census recorded the family on Dover Street with a 43 year old Thomas, recorded as a painter. (This may have been an error as several months prior at the children's christenings he was shown as a porter.) [15]

By the end of that decae they had moved to Sandys Street, Toxteth Park [16] and it was there that Thomas died in April 1870, shown as a labourer. [17] [18]

He was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery on the 10th April 1870. [18] [19]

Research Notes

In the 1841 census there is a Thomas Dix of same age on Clifford Street in Liverpool (not born in Lancashire) who was a porter. As he married in Liverpool subsequently it might also be him. [20]

Just to confuse issues there was another Thomas & Ellen Dix (maiden name Rodger) living in Liverpool and having children in the 1840s/1850s but they were consistently shown living on Stanley Street in Liverpool and that Thomas as a furniture broker.
