Samuel served in the Great War, 1914-19 (Capt., R.A.M.C.; mentioned twice in despatches).^[4]

When Samuel was about 39 in 1918 he married Hilda (Poynting) Chamberlain in Kensington, London, United Kingdom.^[5]
