Obituary for William S. Dixon
According to William's grandson Kelley Eugene Dixon, an obituary was published for Zella's father William in The Grayson Journal (of Independence, Grayson, Virginia) on 6 August 1895[3]. The obituary noted that one of William's daughters had passed away "three weeks prior", and Kelley's notes indicated that the second daughter died "some months later". Kelley transcribed the obituary, included a source reference for the obituary, and added a few notes on a single page. The obituary transcription reads:
William S. Dixon, son of Levi P. and Mary Dixon of this county, died of typhoid fever at Bertha Zinc Mines, Wythe County, Virginia on the 28th of July 1895. He leaves a wife and three small children to mourn their loss. He gave great satisfaction to his friends that he was going to Heaven. A small girl of his preceeded him three weeks to the Glory Land. His mother and sister visited him and saw the last of him on Earth. His obituary may be written in the future. Peace to his ashes.
I. W. Landreth.
According to Kelley's notes, the original clipping from the 6 August 1895 edition of The Grayson Journal was last in the possession of his aunt Clara (daughter of William, sister to Annie and Zella). She passed away in 1983 and it is not known whether the clipping still exists nor who may possess it. An original copy (or image of a copy) of the 6 August 1895 edition of The Grayson Journal has not been located.
