Biography

John Dixon was born in Ohio about 1810 to William Dixon and Elizabeth Keppeling.[1] On 1 Sep 1850 John married Elizabeth (Wertenberger) Synder in Wabash County, Indiana.[2] Elizabeth was the widow of a man with the surname of Snyder by whom she had four children: Adeline (1832- ); Hiram (1841-1866); Christian (1842- ), and Emanuel (1843-1855).[3]

John and Elizabeth had four children:[4]

  1. Polly Dixon (1851- ); m. 1873, Irvin Middlekoff[5]
  2. Mary Dixon, twin (1857- )
  3. Michael Dixon, twin (1857-1907); m. 1881, Sarah Brindle[6]
  4. Rachel Elizabeth Dixon (1859-1890); m. Henry Marshall

In 1860 John, Elizabeth and their children are living with David and Catharine Wertenberger (Elizabeth's brother?) in Pleasant Township, Wabash County. Next door were John's brother Jerry [Jeremiah] and Sarah Dixon.[4]. In 1870, 13-year-old Mary Dixon is not listed with the family in the census record, and it is assumed she was deceased. They were still living next to Jeremiah and his family, and next to him was David Wertenberger, and then Daniel Wertenberger.[7]

According to FAG, John died on 19 Oct 1875.[8] In 1880, Elizabeth was living with their son, Michael Dixon and Michael's niece, Margaret Dixon.[9] FAG givens Elizabeth's death as 12 Nov 1868, which is obviously incorrect as she is found in the 1870 and 1880 census records.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
