Biography

Tillman was born in 1750, either Dinwiddie County, Virginia before his parents moved to North Carolina, or as the DAR reference notes, he was born in Caswell County, North Carolina. See Research note. [1][2]

His biography[3] notes he was born in Caswell Co NC, the son Henry Dixon Sr and Elizabeth Abernathy from Prince George Co Virginia [the part that is now Dinwiddie Co]. The Henry Dixon family migrated to Caswell Co NC sometime before the Revolutionary War. Dates have not been established. [1][3]

Tilman was a Capt in Revolutionary War from the NC Regiment. Listed as "Tilghman Dixon," NC lst Lt, lst NC, Oct 10, 1885. Capt, Feb 5, 1777, taken prisoner at Charleston, May 12,1780, exchanged June 14, 1781, retired Jan 1 1783 [2] He is the brother of war hero Lt Col Henry “Hal” Dixon.[3]

Tilman married Mary Carlos 16 Nov 1789 in Sussex Co VA. "Mary Carlos" is identified as the daughter of "Archilaus Carlos," Robert Booth Security and witness.[4] Records in Virginia show several deeds where Archelaus and Henry Dixon were witnesses, indicating the families had links and both related to the Wynn family.[3]

He died at his home place "Dixona" in Smith County, Tennessee. Dixon bible entry for Tilman Dixon reads: "Died at his residence at Dixon Springs, Tenn on 2nd of April a.d.1816, at 10 minutes after 10 o'clock A.M. Major Tilman Dixon in the sixty sixth year of his age." [3] He is buried in the family cemetery at "Dixona." Photos on line [1][3]

Research Note

Tilman's father, Henry Dixon (Dickson) is first recorded in Prince George Co, Virginia in 1745 when he was granted land patents for 233 acres and 931 acres on the north and south sides of Sappony Creek in what is present-day Dinwiddie Co. Tilman, born in 1750 was later to marry Mary Carlos, whose family lived on Sappony Creek on the border of Dinwiddie and Sussex Counties. Mary's grandparents, the Carters, owned land adjacent to this "Henry Dixon" which points to a Prince George county origin for this generation of the Dixon family. [6][7]

The oft-quoted reference to the Carlos/DonCarlos-Tilman Dixon marriage from Boddie’s Southside Virginia Families has numerous errors. Regarding marriage information: while there was a Rev. Thomas Lundie at St Andrews Parish in 1789, there is no record of a marriage between Mary and Tilman; St. Andrews Parish is in Brunswick not Sussex Co. While the Sussex Co Register of Marriages does not identify the parish, Albemarle Parish was the one serving Sussex are at that time, and where Mary's brother, William Carter Carlos married a few years later. [Southside Virginia Families, Vol. I., by John Bennett Boddie, page 173.]

update - merge completed

Dixon-8997 and Dixon-3408 appear to represent the same person because: same dates - same death location. These duplicate profiles obviously represent the same person and should be merged. Thanks!

Dixon-7675 and Dixon-3408 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents and exact date of birth

Difference in date of death to be noted in the biography until a primary source can be added.

update: merge into Dixon-3408 completed

Tilghman-92 and Dixon-3408 appear to represent the same person because: Tilghman (in Tilghman-92) is another spelling of Tilman. Please take a look - I think these profiles are both for Tilman (Tillman, Tilghman) Dixon. Please merge if you agree. Thanks!
