Biography

Charles Dixon was the eldest son of Charles Dixon and Susannah Coates. He was six years old when the family left England for Nova Scotia. At the age of 16, he performed garrison duty at Fort Cumberland, Nova Scotia.

In 1788, Charles married Rhoda Emmerson. They had 5 children, one of whom died as an infant. Rhoda died on July 27, 1799. Three months later, Charles married Elizabeth Humphrey. They had 11 children. Charles traveled frequently to the United States.

On September 1, 1837, Charles and Elizabeth, and their seven youngest children, left Sackville and traveled in a number of covered wagons to Kirtland, Ohio, where they settled. In 1854, at the age of 89, he and his wife, with some of the family, left Ohio for Salt Lake City. They stopped for a few days in Rock Island, where Mr. Dixon fell and sustained fatal injuries. He died on May 22, 1854. The family pursued their journey and arrived safely in Salt Lake City.
