Biography

Lois Ann Goodine passed away peacefully at home on December 27th, 2021.

A long-time resident of Woodstock, she was the daughter of Raymond Dixon and Laura Sullivan, and the wife of the late Dr. Frederick S. Goodine. Lois was part of a large family, with whom she remained close throughout her lifetime.

As a young child, she saw her father go off to war in Europe and was fortunate to see him return safely home. Notwithstanding that safe return, a few years later she saw her mother widowed at a young age. Lois attended a teacher’s college in Fredericton. She first taught in New Denmark, NB, before joining her husband, Frederick, with their firstborn, Rick, as a new young family in Halifax, NS, where Frederick studied medicine. A few years later, a medical internship took the young family, along with newborn, Bill, to Saint John, NB. In 1959, their then family of four settled in Woodstock where they would remain, and after some years their third son, Jonathan, was born.

With her boys in school, Lois became involved in various community endeavors over the years. She enjoyed her time as a volunteer teacher at the Peter Pan School for children with special needs and working with the Carleton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She co-founded a local chapter of the Canadian Diabetes Association, a cause that remained dear to her throughout her years. Active in her church community, she taught Sunday School for many years. She served as President of the Parish Council of St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church, and during her term oversaw the construction of a new Parish Rectory. She served actively in many roles and for many years with the Carleton County Music Festival, and was a strong supporter of the arts in her community. She also served as a member of the Region 3 Hospital Board, the Community Residential Living Board, and the Valley Family Resource Center.

Her dedication to the community was second only to her devotion to family. Lois always enjoyed and treasured time with family and friends. In later years, she enjoyed traveling, and most of all loved her role as ‘Nana’ to her eight grandchildren.
