Ellen Dixon was born in 1870 in St Helens, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Thomas Dixon and Elizabeth (Aspinall) Dixon. Her birth was registered in the first quarter of 1871, in Prescot district.
By April 2nd 1871, Ellen's family were living at 19 Tontine Street, Windle. Her father Thomas was the head of this unusually large household, which besides him, his wife Elizabeth and their three daughters included Elizabeth's grandmother Margaret Dugdale; Elizabeth's widowed mother Alice; Elizabeth's sister Ann and two brothers James and John; and no less than eight lodgers. In spite of this, Thomas' occupation was labourer and not boarding house keeper. Thomas and Elizabeth's children were Emma (3), Mary (1) and Ellen (7 months old).
By April 3rd 1881, Thomas and Elizabeth were still living with Elizabeth's mother, who was now listed as the head of the household. They were at 17 & 19 Tontine Street, Windle. Their children were Emma (13), Mary (11), Ellen (9), John (7), Margaret (6), Ann (2) and Elizabeth (6 months old).
By April 5th 1891, Ellen was living and working in a large lodging house run by her aunt Alice Aspinall, at 50 Naylor Street, Windle. She was employed as a general domestic servant.
Ellen married William Winstanley in 1895, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district. William was about 27 years older than Ellen.
By March 31st 1901, William and Ellen were living in Tontine Street, Windle. They had one child, Sarah J, who was one year old; they also had eight boarders, and a domestic servant to help look after them all. William was employed as a glass works labourer.
Ellen died in 1907 in St Helens, aged 37. She was buried on 17 Jan 1907 in St Helens Cemetery, in a family grave.
