James Dixon was born on 10 Dec 1845 in Sutton, Lancashire, in what is now St Helens. He was the son of Robert Dixon and Elizabeth (Highcock) Dixon. He was christened on 4 Jan 1846 at St Michael's Church in Burtonwood. His family's address was given as Sutton, and his father's occupation as labourer. He had two older sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret.

James' brother Richard Dixon was born on 6 Aug 1848 in Sutton, St Helens; his birth was registered in the third quarter of 1848, in Prescot district. He was christened on 27 Aug 1848 at St Michael's Church in Burtonwood, Lancashire. The family's address was given as Sutton, and his father's occupation as miner.

James' brother William Dixon was born on 25 Dec 1850 in Sutton, St Helens; his birth was registered in the first quarter of 1851, in Prescot district.

By March 30th 1851, James' parents were living in Sutton Nook with their five surviving children. James' father was working as a labourer. Also in the household was James' aunt Ellen and her husband John Roberts and their one-month-old daughter Sarah. Next door were James' aunt Elizabeth and family, and James' grandfather.

James' brother William was christened on 4 Jan 1852 at St Michael's Church in Burtonwood, Lancashire. The family's address was given as Sutton, and his father's occupation as labourer.

James' youngest brother John Dixon was born in 1853 in Sutton, St Helens; his birth was registered in the last quarter of 1853, in Prescot district. He was christened on 18 Dec 1853 at St Michael's Church in Burtonwood, Lancashire. The family's address was given as Sutton, and his father's occupation as labourer.

By April 7th 1861, the family were living in Sutton Moss, Sutton. James' father was working as an agricultural labourer. Four of his children were still with him - James, Richard, William and John. None of the boys were working yet.

James married Ellen Borrows on 16 Apr 1865 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton. James was 19 and a collier; Ellen was 20. Both were living in Sutton, and neither had been married before. Their fathers were named as Robert Dixon (collier) and Joseph Borrows (collier). The witnesses were Thomas Houghton and Catherine Houghton.

Their son John was born in 1865 in Parr.

Their son Robert was born in 1866 in Sutton. He was christened on 16 Dec 1866 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton.

Their daughter Hannah was born in about 1869 in Parr.

Their son William was born in 1870 in Parr.

By April 2nd 1871, James and Ellen were living at 140 Chancery Lane, Parr. James was working as a coal miner, and there were four children - John (6), Robert (4), Hannah (2) and baby William (8 months old).

Their daughter Elizabeth was born on 24 Jun 1872 in Parr. She was christened on 28 Jul 1872 at St Peter's Church in Parr. The family's address was given as Parr, and her father's occupation as miner.

Their son James was born on 12 Mar 1874 in Parr. He was christened on 26 Apr 1874 at St Peter's Church in Parr. The family's address was given as Parr, and his father's occupation as miner.

Their daughter Margaret Ellen was born on 24 Feb 1878 in Parr. She was christened on 31 Mar 1878 at St Peter's Church in Parr. The family's address was given as Parr, and her father's occupation as miner. Little Margaret died at the age of 16 months; she was buried on 16 Jul 1879 at St Peter's, and the family's address was given as Parr. Her name was used again for the next child, as was often done.

Their daughter Margaret Ellen was born on 16 Nov 1879 in Parr. She was christened on 28 Dec 1879 at St Peter's Church in Parr. The family's address was given as Parr, and her father's occupation as miner.

By April 3rd 1881, they were still at the same address, and James was still a coal miner. Their eldest son John was working as a coal pit labourer, and Robert (now 14) was a glass works labourer. The other five children weren't doing paid work yet.

Their daughter Winifred was born in 1884 in St Helens.

James and Ellen's son John married Mary Alice Burrows in 1886 in St Helens.

James and Ellen's daughter Hannah married Henry Lilly on 16 Jun 1888 at Parr Mount Holy Trinity Church in St Helens.

By April 5th 1891, the family had moved to 6 Lee Street in Sutton, St Helens. James was still working as a coal miner. Only four of James and Ellen's children were still with them - Robert (24) and James (17) were coal miners like their dad; Margaret (11) and Winifred (6) were still in school. William (now 20) was away in Holywell, boarding there and working as a coal miner. Elizabeth (now 18) was employed closer to home - she had a job as a domestic servant in Windle, St Helens.

James and Ellen's son William married Charlotte Williams on 17 Oct 1891 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton.

Their son James married Elizabeth Lilly on 3 Jun 1893 at Holy Trinity Church in Parr Mount, St Helens.

Their son Robert married Mary French on 14 Sep 1893 at St John the Evangelist Church in Abram, Lancashire.

Their daughter Elizabeth married Peter Barr on 14 Apr 1894 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton.

By March 31st 1901, only Margaret and Winifred were still at home with their parents, who were now at 8 Lee Street, Sutton. James was still working as a coal miner.

Winifred married John Thomas Rigby on 6 Apr 1907 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton.

Margaret married William Gallyer on 14 May 1910 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton.

By April 2nd 1911, James and Ellen were still at 8 Lee Street, and at 66, James was still working as a coal hewer. Margaret Ellen and her husband William Gallyer were boarding with them; William was also a coal miner.

James died in 1925 in St Helens, aged 80. His death was registered in the final quarter of the year, in Prescot district.
