Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

William Dixon was born in 1870 in Parr, St Helens, Lancashire. He was the son of James Dixon and Ellen (Burrows) Dixon. He had two older brothers, John and Robert, and an older sister Hannah.

By April 2nd 1871, the family were living at 140 Chancery Lane, Parr. William's father was working as a coal miner, and there were four children - John (6), Robert (4), Hannah (2) and baby William (8 months old).

William's sister Elizabeth was born on 24 Jun 1872 in Parr. She was christened on 28 Jul 1872 at St Peter's Church in Parr. The family's address was given as Parr, and her father's occupation as miner.

His brother James was born on 12 Mar 1874 in Parr. He was christened on 26 Apr 1874 at St Peter's Church in Parr. The family's address was given as Parr, and his father's occupation as miner.

His sister Margaret Ellen was born on 24 Feb 1878 in Parr. She was christened on 31 Mar 1878 at St Peter's Church in Parr. The family's address was given as Parr, and her father's occupation as miner. Little Margaret died at the age of 16 months; she was buried on 16 Jul 1879 at St Peter's, and the family's address was given as Parr. Her name was used again for the next child, as was often done.

His sister Margaret Ellen was born on 16 Nov 1879 in Parr. She was christened on 28 Dec 1879 at St Peter's Church in Parr. The family's address was given as Parr, and her father's occupation as miner.

By April 3rd 1881, they were still at the same address, and William's father was still a coal miner. William's older brother John was working as a coal pit labourer, and his brother Robert (now 14) was a glass works labourer. The other five children weren't doing paid work yet.

William's sister Winifred was born in 1884 in St Helens.

William's brother John married Mary Alice Burrows in 1886 in St Helens.

His sister Hannah married Henry Lilly on 16 Jun 1888 at Parr Mount Holy Trinity Church in St Helens.

By April 5th 1891, the family had moved to 6 Lee Street in Sutton, St Helens. William's father was still working as a coal miner. Only four of the children were still at home - Robert (24) and James (17) were coal miners like their dad; Margaret (11) and Winifred (6) were still in school. William (now 20) was away in Holywell, boarding there and working as a coal miner. His address there was Tai Drill, Bagillt Road, Holywell. Elizabeth (now 18) was employed closer to home - she had a job as a domestic servant in Windle, St Helens.

William married Charlotte Williams on 17 Oct 1891 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton. William was 21 and a miner; Charlotte was 19. Neither had been married before, and both were living in Sutton. Their fathers were named as James Dixon (miner) and Benjamin Williams (deceased labourer). The witnesses were John Dixon and Elizabeth Dixon.

Their son Ernest was born in about 1896 in St Helens.

Their daughter Winifred was born in about 1899 in St Helens.

By March 31st 1901, William and Charlotte were living at 44 Wawn Street, South Shields. William was working as a coal hewer.

By April 2nd 1911, they were back in St Helens. William was still a coal hewer.

Research Notes

There are two possible death registrations if he died in Prescot district - which is far from certain. One was in 1914, but this William is buried in St Helens Cemetery, and based on other family members buried with him, it doesn't look like he's the right one. The other was in 1928 - not buried in St Helens Cemetery, and not currently listed on Lancashire OPC.
No death registrations for a Charlotte Dixon the right age in Prescot; various matches elsewhere.
