Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

John Dixon was born in 1853 in Sutton, St Helens, Lancashire. He was the son of Robert Dixon and Elizabeth or Betty (Highcock) Dixon. His birth was registered in the last quarter of 1853, in Prescot district. He had two older sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret, and three older brothers, James, Richard and William. He was christened on 18 Dec 1853 at St Michael's Church in Burtonwood, Lancashire. His father's occupation was given as labourer, and the family's address as Sutton.

By April 7th 1861, the family were living in Sutton Moss, Sutton. John's father was working as an agricultural labourer. Four of his children were still with him - James, Richard, William and John. None of the boys were working yet.

By April 2nd 1871, they were still in Sutton Moss. John's father was employed as a teams man. Only two of the children were still living with their parents - William and John, both employed as miners. John's married brother Richard was visiting them on census night with his wife and their baby. They also had a 16-year-old boarder named William Gorty, who was a miner and born in St Helens; he bears a strong and perhaps suspicious resemblance to the final person in the household, another visitor, 16-year-old William Gouty, also born in St Helens.

John married Ann Lamb on 28 Jul 1878 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton. John was 24 and a miner living in Sutton; Ann was 20 and living in Runcorn, Cheshire. Neither had been married before. Their fathers were named as Robert Dixon (labourer) and Samuel Lamb (waterman). The witnesses were William Dixon and Winifred Dixon.

Their son Jesse was born on 5 June 1879 in Bryn, Lancashire. His birth was registered in the second quarter of the year, in Wigan district; he was christened on 2 Nov 1879 at St Michael's Church in Burtonwood, Lancashire. His father's occupation was given as collier, and the family's address as Sutton.

Their son Robert Samuel was born in about February 1881 in Parr, St Helens. He was christened on 29 May 1881 at St Michael's Church in Burtonwood, Lancashire. The christening gives his birth date as 6 March, but the family seems to have thought later he was born in February. His father's occupation was recorded as miner, and the family's address as Sutton.

By April 3rd 1881, John and Ann and their two little boys were living in Parr Moss, Parr. John was working as a coal miner.

Their daughter Florence was born in 1886 in Sutton, St Helens.

By April 5th 1891, they were living in Mercers Cottages, School Lane, Burtonwood. John was employed as a collier. In addition to John and Ann and the three children, the household included a lodger, Thomas H Gordon, a married collier from Staffordshire.

John died in 1899, aged 43.

Research Notes

Baptism

FamilySearch has the baptism record indexed once as Dickson and twice as Dickinson, presumably meaning either it's hard to make out and different transcribers saw it differently, or possibly it's a copying error and the Bishop's Transcripts say one thing and the actual parish register another.

Burial

Not in St Helens Cemetery & Crematorium records.
