Jesse Newton Doan was born in 1850 to George Washington Doan and Elizabeth Rariden Doan in Plainfield, Hendricks County, Indiana. ^[1]

His father, Washington Doan married Elizabeth Rariden on August 1, 1833 in Hendricks, Indiana. ^{[2] [3]} Jesse was their ninth child.
