Biography

Israel Doane, the son of Daniel Doane, was born about 1672, probably in Eastham, Massachusetts. "He married first, about 1700, Ruth Freeman who was born about 1680, and died June 7, 1728, the daughter of Edmund Freeman and Sarah Mayo. Married second, Apr. 19, 1729, widow Mercy Sparrow who was born Apr. 19, 1685, the widow of Richard Sparrow and daughter of James Cobb and Sarah Lewis and granddaughter of Henry Cobb, the immigrant. Israel Doane was admitted townsman of Eastham March 17, 1702 and served as surveyor in 1704, 1705-6, 1724-5 and 1734-5; a constable in 1709-10; a selectman in 1719-20, 1725-6 and a juryman in 1731-2. The probate records at Barnstable show nothing of his estate and the time of his death does not appear. The names Edmund and Prence or Prince, found among his descendants in the Nova Scotia, Saybrook, Conn., and Putnam Co., N. Y., branches of the family, are derived from Lieut. Edmund Freeman of Eastham and his mother, Mercy Prence, the daughter of Gov. Thomas Prence." ^[1]

4. Elnathan, b. Apr. 9, 1709.
5. Daniel, b. Aug. 9, 1714; was a mariner. Wm. Paine was appointed to settle his estate Jan. 28, 1740.
6. Edmund, b. Apr. 20, 1718.

Israel Doane was a son of Dr. Daniel Doane by his first wife, said by her nephew, Harwich town historian, to have been Constance Snow, daughter of Constance and Nicholas Snow, who were the Doane's neighbors in Eastham, Massachusetts.^[3]

However, as no official documentary proof of Constance's marriage to Daniel Doane exists, and the only existiing contemporary record is Josiah Paine's unofficial notebook, now in the Eastham Public Library, listing Constance Snow as Israel Doane's mother must be marked: "UNPROVEN." ^[4]
