Alfred was born in 1824. He was the son of John Dobson and Elizabeth Barker. He passed away in 1887. [1]

Mr Alfred Dobson, an old settler, died at 11 o'clock this morning. Deceased, who was a well-known surveyor and civil engineer, arrived in New Zealand in 1851. He held the appointment of chief surveyor at Nelson under Mr Stafford, the then superintendent, and was chief surveyor and provincial engineer of Marlborough after the separation from Nelson. From 1870 to 1876 he was resident engineer at Picton, and superintended the construction of the railway from Picton to Blenheim, since which he resided in the latter place and practised his profession up to within a few months ago. Deceased was brother to Mr Edward Dobson, well known in Canterbury. [2]
